Color Wheel Expands!

Posted in Color Wheel Studio Blog

It’s been so long since we were able to post here and that’s because we have had some FANTASTIC things in the works! In the Spring of 2014 Color Wheel opened it’s new second location at 508 East Howard Avenue in downtown Decatur. Less than half of a mile from our After School Art Studio at 112 Church Street, this new location is a natural extension of what we already offer the Decatur community.

Our first location now works solely with ages 5 – 7 in Camps and in the After School Art Studio. This has proven to be a perfect fit for the bungalow-style house. It’s cozy atmosphere provides the ideal creative space for our youngest artists. Color Wheel’s new location is housed in a converted 1950’s candle factory. It is a big, beautiful, open space where we hold Camps and Classes for artists ages 8 – 18.

Being able to work consistently with our young artists in the After School program from the time they are in kindergarten through their fifth, sometimes sixth grade year, has been something we have always benefited from as a studio. Our artists develop a proficient visual vocabulary, create wonderful work, and walk away with a creative approach to their thinking and interactions with the world around them. In years past, saying goodbye as they entered middle school was always difficult. Now, in our beautiful second studio, we have a space for our older artists to continue to be and learn and create!

We are so excited to be working in this space and the kids love it, too. Sometimes we see them just spontaneously spin from one side of the studio to the other, just soaking in all of the room to move. And we have certainly taken advantage of the space by creating some large scale works AND by hosting community events! A great example of this has been the inaugural Decatur Lantern Parade, with the fabulous Chantelle Rytter, which launched from our new location on May 14th. In conjunction with our year-end Exhibition for the studio, which was a stop on the Decatur Artwalk, this was a very exciting night. You can check out images from the parade here!

We’ve also hosted the Cast Party for Decatur High School’s performance of Hairspray: the Musical last Spring and the Decatur Bulldog Boosters will hold their auction here this Fall in November. Coming up next, on Friday, October 17th the Color Wheel 508 Studio will hold the Student Clothesline Show hosted by the Decatur Arts Alliance. This will be for artists K-12th grade from 6:00 to 8:30. Be sure and join us!

And be on the lookout for more exciting Color Wheel / Decatur collaborations coming your way. With a great community involved in a space this wonderful the possibilities are endless!
