Third Thursdays @ Color Wheel 508

We’ve started something new at the Color Wheel 508 Studio we are calling “Third Thursdays” and after our inaugural meeting last month we’re really excited! Third Thursdays are a chance for us to connect with all of the talented High School artists in the community and offer them some creative fun. We began Third Thursdays this February with a DRAW IN and Portfolio Review. It was a chance for us to hang out and do some free-form drawing as well as to check out the work some of these talented artists have put...

Mad About Mannequins

Mad About Mannequins

You’ve all seen them… those wee little wooden mannequins that we associate with art and artists.     We have a special love for them here at the 508 Studio. And we’re not alone! These figures have been sitting on the shelves of our front gallery in various mannequin poses enjoying their quiet little lives. Until just the other day our artists gave them some new life!     That’s right. Our creative artists decided the mannequins would be much happier this Winter with these awesome little hats. How...

For the Love of Four-Square

For the Love of Four-Square

Have you seen it? Drive by any afternoon. The fixation on Four Square at Color Wheel’s 508 Studio rivals that of any major sport. Each and every day they line up to play after finishing their art class… The list of rules, tricks and variations with their quirky little names is innumerable. Yet, somehow they manage to keep up with it all. And are totally self-regulating to boot! There is a very diplomatic system in place for a rotating referee. Works for us! We love seeing their dedication and all of the ways they navigate...

Knit Wits!

We have so many fantastic artists at the studio, from the staff to the students. Case in point: The Textiles Talents that that have taken Color Wheel by storm! Kari Culberson, founder of Kari Fisher Designs, is a multi-talented Textiles instructor at the 508 Studio with many tricks up her sleeve. In her own shop, Kari hand-prints linen textiles with blocks she carves herself. The results are stunning, as you can see here: Photo courtesy of: Kari Fisher Designs Recently, Kari invited the staff to preview her upcoming collection-in-progress...

Color Wheel Expands!

It’s been so long since we were able to post here and that’s because we have had some FANTASTIC things in the works! In the Spring of 2014 Color Wheel opened it’s new second location at 508 East Howard Avenue in downtown Decatur. Less than half of a mile from our After School Art Studio at 112 Church Street, this new location is a natural extension of what we already offer the Decatur community. Our first location now works solely with ages 5 – 7 in Camps and in the After School Art Studio. This has proven to be a...

Core Values Evolve!

Core Values Evolve!

We always like to tell the kids that Color Wheel isn’t Cathy or 112 Church Street or the playground or Ceramics. Color Wheel is every artist that comes through the front door. It is something we share. Color Wheel is a living, breathing thing that changes and evolves, hopefully for the better! Just like the studio, our Core Values have evolved as they have been put into practice over the years. Our Core Values inform all that we do here. From the way that we speak to each other to the projects we create to the artists we study we...

Process vs. Product

Process vs. Product

It all started with a bit of chalk. Inspired by English artist, Julian Beever the kindergarten and first grade class began an adventure that would take them to the heart of “process” oriented creativity: The Temporal. Nothing is more temporary than chalk on a sidewalk in the Spring. With this in mind our little artists took to the pavement spending a month of their art time creating pieces that wouldn’t last. In fact, with the rain this April many of these often elaborate works wouldn’t make it past one week. It was...

Interns Make it Happen!

Interns Make it Happen!

We are so lucky here at Color Wheel. Some of the BEST people, children AND adults, have passed through this studio. But it is the interns that make us feel REALLY special because they just want to hang out here. And who wouldn’t? They come to us for a variety of reasons. There are the high school students who want to gain a little experience and have something meaningful to do with their time. There are the college students home for the Summer who are looking to have some fun with creative kids. And sometimes there are even former Color...
