We like to expand our horizons here in our little downtown Decatur art studio–we like to think big! What better way to think big than to focus on the art happening right now in our big, big world? Each year in the After School Art Studio we have an over-arching theme from which all classes work and this year we are looking outside of the U.S. to artists currently working across the globe. By focusing on one theme our hope is that our little artists walk away with a greater understanding of the whole of the art world and how it interacts. Our staff of degreed artists and art educators bring their talents and passion to the studio when choosing which working artists to draw inspiration from. We are very impressed with some of their picks.
Currently happening in the studio:
Kindergarten and first grade artists explore material in Fiber Arts as they study the soft-sculpture of New York and Europe based artist, Abigail Doan.
Second and third grade artists construct the bases for their sculptures as they study the narrative, ceramic totems of Korean artist Sunkoo Yuh.
Third and fourth grade artists begin paintings based on the grid-like, narrative work of Thai artist Udomsak Krisanamis.
Fourth and fifth grade artists begin to conceptualize the elaborate construction of their altered books and maps based on the paper work of South African artist Barbara Wildenboer.
We can’t wait to see how these choices will inspire our young artists and their creations!
